When you shop for CBD, you will see three terms on labels: full spectrum, broad spectrum and isolate. They describe what is in the extract besides CBD.
Full spectrum
Full-spectrum extracts keep a wide range of naturally occurring hemp compounds, including terpenes, minor cannabinoids and trace amounts of THC (within the 0.3% legal limit). Some people prefer the fuller flavour and aroma.
Broad spectrum
Broad-spectrum extracts also retain many hemp compounds, but the THC is removed. They sit between full spectrum and isolate.
CBD isolate
Isolate is CBD in its purest form, typically 99% or higher, with other compounds removed. It has little to no flavour of its own, which makes it a flexible base for flavoured e-liquids.
Which should you choose?
- Prefer a clean, neutral taste? Isolate is a common choice.
- Want the full hemp profile? Look at full spectrum.
- Want the middle ground without THC? Choose broad spectrum.
Whatever you choose, check the lab report for the exact cannabinoid profile. CBD products are not medicines, and you should speak to your doctor if you take medication.
What are terpenes?
Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in many plants, including hemp. They give each product its scent and part of its flavour, and they are one reason full-spectrum and broad-spectrum extracts taste different from isolate.
How the lab report tells you which type it is
The certificate of analysis lists every cannabinoid detected. A full-spectrum product will show several cannabinoids and a small amount of THC. A broad-spectrum product will show several cannabinoids with THC not detected. An isolate will show almost only CBD. Our lab report guide explains the layout.
Which is best for vapes?
E-liquids are flavoured by design, so many are made with isolate or broad-spectrum extract so the flavour is not masked. Check the product page and the lab report for the exact extract type.
Common questions
Does full spectrum contain THC?
It can contain trace amounts, up to the 0.3% federal limit for hemp. If you want to avoid THC entirely, choose broad spectrum or isolate and confirm it on the lab report.
Is one type better than another?
It comes down to preference. We make no medical claims for any type. CBD products are not medicines, and you should speak to your doctor if you take medication.
